Smack dab in the heart of the Kawarthas, Stoney Lake is one of the largest bodies of water in central Ontario, the deepest of all the Kawartha lakes and home to a variety of fish species including: walleye, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, northern pike, muskellunge (muskie), yellow perch, brook trout, brown trout and crappie.

Walleye – a.k.a.: Pickerel, yellow pickerel, doré or pikeperch
The most popular and arguably the most beautiful game fish in Ontario the walleye is best known for its delicious meat. This tasty fish is found in and around the shoals of Stoney Lake in the summer and in the shallows during the spring and fall. Average weight of walleye in the Kawartha Lakes is 3lbs but walleye over 10lbs are not uncommon in Stoney Lake.
Muskellunge – a.k.a.: maskinonge or muskie (includes hybrids with pike)
A voracious predator, the Muskellunge has become a Kawartha Lakes legend and has been a hot topic and the centre of conversation of anglers around Stoney Lake for hundreds of years. These long slender fish average 5-10lbs but catches over 45 inches have been caught in Stoney Lake.
Largemouth Bass – a.k.a.: black bass and green bass
Without doubt, the largemouth bass is the best known fish in the Kawartha Lakes. Largemouth are brawling fish, aggressive strikers and are mostly found in the warm, weedy, slow or still waters of Stoney Lake.
Northern Pike – a.k.a.: pike, great northern pike, northern grass pike or jackfish
One of the greatest fighting fish with a vicious strike, the Northern Pike can be found in shallow water along the shores and marshes of Stoney Lake. Although their average weight is 2-4lb throughout northern Ontario it’s not uncommon for catches over 25lbs to be found in Stoney Lake.
Yellow Perch
Eager biters, yellow perch have to be the hungriest fish in the Kawartha Lakes and are abundant in Stoney Lake. Generally, if you catch one then you’re sure to catch another as these golden striped beauties are most active in schools.
Carp
One of the most abundant fish species in the Kawarthas, carp are also one of the largest. It is not uncommon for Stoney Lake anglers to catch half a dozen 15lb carp in one day. These heavy bodied, thick scaled fish can be formidable opponents because of their large size (ranging up to 50lbs) and can be caught using doughballs, corn, worms and various other concoctions.
Smallmouth Bass – a.k.a.: black bass and green bass
The smallmouth bass is one of the most sought after fish species in the Kawartha Lakes region because of its superior fighting capabilities, stamina and beauty. These furious fish love shallow rocky areas and underwater hideouts such as docks, tree stumps, and boulders.
